iPhone 1.0.2 update released
Before you get your hopes up, there's allegedly no new functionality here -- "bug fixes" only. Then again, that was the verbiage last time, too, and there ended up being a few little goodies packed in there. Word to the wise: we're getting an error on our hacked unit right now, so let us know what y'all are getting.
Update: Yep, Jailbreak still works! Phew.
Update (code BAD): We take it back about our backup working properly. Despite the fact that we had a couple of error messages during the upgrade which seemed innocuous, this iPhone update wiped out our device and refused to restore our last back backup, instead creating a new backup based on a fresh restore. In other words: we just lost everything on our friggin device and the automatic backup is gone.

Bummer on loosing your stuff. Probably one reason why some of us did not rush to play with the hacks. If you have a device that is free to be without, play away. If you need it to be operational, a good practice is don't rush to deploy hacks and beta apps. You risk a lot.

I don't have an iPhone [shocking] but can't you just choose NOT to install the update?
avenirex @ Aug 21st 2007 8:02PM
Argh. It errored during the update and now has to restore it. What the hell. I hadn't tried jailbreak or anything non-standard, but it erased everything. This is crap.

Got the same error when trying to upgrade my 1.0.1+installer.app to 1.0.2. Had to restore to factory default and lose all personal data. However, after restore, my iphone is now 1.0.2 (verified from settings/general/about).
installer.app doesn't seem to work on 1.0.2 now. Step #8 ended up with error "failed RecoveryDittoFileCopy: Operation Ditto Failed" then quit.

Looks like installer.app has been updated. Now the firmware version list includes 1.0.2. Installing it now and hope it work. (the mac installer needs to download some 91MB file...)

Try jailing it, updating, and then jailbreak it...seems to have worked on my buddie's iPhone :P

I've just updated and it works fine.

I also had a hacked iPhone and had to download the complete 92.1MB file because I had to completely restore my iPhone due to the hacks. It failed a few times (I got the same error and screenshot above that Engadget posted), and I thought I bricked it. I ran the installer again and it worked.I was able to choose the restore from the backup I had from earlier today. All of my stuff came back. My hacks were gone, but I was able to easily install them again.

Wow, if I had gotten an iPhone I would've hacked it and had lost all my files on this update, too....kinda makes me happy I couldn't afford one.

But, seriously, you had to have seen this coming. Apple will do anything to maintain or regain control, you just can't win with Apple. Hell, it's so powerful it's gray; when have you *ever* seen a gray Apple before?

Once. It was all fuzzy. I elected not to eat it.

Mine worked flawlessly this morning. My phone is unhacked, lame to some I guess, but nonetheless it's less likely to have these errors so far. I saw some feedback about safari working a little faster and wifi performing better. So far it seems slightly faster than before but that could be a placebo effect. So far so good. Another person spoke of the iPod/surfing scenario where the iPod crashes while using safari. Mine did that once. I'll have to see if that has been rectified.

that error looks incredibly microsoftian to me. an unknown error occurred, with a hex memory block. thanks, that helps alot.

Installed the update this morning. Everything loaded fine. iPhone is working great and even survived a restart with no issues. The only thing I have noticed so far is that my emails seem to be loading faster without that waiting icon, especially when folks have creative signature with different fonts and colors.
...and folks who hacked their iPhone expected this to work flawlessly why?
smi1ey @ Aug 22nd 2007 12:22PM
i don't feel sorry for those that hacked their iphone and are having issues. the dev team isn't cooking these up to work with hacked phones! i remember all the complaints with homebrew on psps and all the issues. never hacked my psp, never had an issue. same goes for the iphone. :) (there are definitely some tempting apps out there though.)

My hacked iPhone updated fine and the backup was restored. It's a matter of procedure. First, make sure you have a backup of the backup! Library/Application Support/Mobilesync/Backup (just in case), then click restore, confirm the update and restore dialogue and download the file, while it's downloading unplug the iPhone. Once the file is downloaded plug in the iPhone again and hit restore, now you get a "do you want to restore" message instead of update/restore. It will still update the phone but without the error messages, when it's done wait for the phone to activate before you restore the last backup (i think this is the important part, if you try to restore the backup before the phone activates it'll fail the restore), after all this hack the phone again and bob's-ur-uncle...

Mine cleared itself after the first update (1.0.1). I believe it was because I used Jailbreak. It didnt clear this time, and all of my ringtones are still there from iphoneringtonemaker.
Aurans @ Aug 22nd 2007 2:51PM
Yahoo Push Mail seems to be working better. Anyone else noticing this?
Andrew Somers @ Sep 1st 2007 2:45PM
You DON'T lose your stuff when you upgrade! - you DO have to RESTORE TWICE, as the first restore fails for some reason.
After you restore the second time, all your SMS messages, settings, and other hoo hah are restored, as they should be.

so I used jailbreak, but I I couldn't seem to get it to work with the version 1.1.1.. After two unsuccesful attempts at unlocking I gave up and just pressed the restore button in Itunes. Does anyone know if I will encounter a problem updating?
thanks
